ECOC Exhibition 2026

In-Person

Date/Time: 09/20/2026

Location: Málaga

Pro Optix attended the ECOC Exhibition 2026, one of Europe’s premier events for optical communication and fiber innovation.

The event showcased groundbreaking developments in photonics, fiber components, and high-speed connectivity, providing an ideal platform to share expertise and strengthen partnerships across the telecom and data center ecosystem. Pro Optix connected with manufacturers, suppliers, and engineers to explore new technologies enhancing network performance and reliability.

What we learned at ECOC:

ECOC 2026 highlighted just how quickly optical communications is evolving. Across the exhibition, AI infrastructure and data center growth were clear drivers of higher bandwidth requirements, while developments in coherent optics and component availability raised important considerations for both new and existing networks.

The roadmap is moving beyond 800G

400G and 800G are supporting today’s high-capacity networks, but the technology roadmap is moving quickly. 1.6T optical solutions are now commercially available, while 6.4T and 12.8T concepts are already being discussed for future generations.

The challenge is not simply achieving higher speeds. It is understanding when new technology is appropriate and how it fits alongside existing infrastructure.

Higher speeds are changing product lifecycles

Demand is shifting toward higher-speed optics, component manufacturers are increasingly focusing production capacity on newer technologies. This could mean longer lead times for established 1G and 10G products and, in some cases, earlier end-of-life as individual components become unavailable.

Lifecycle planning and identifying suitable replacement options early will become increasingly important.

Coherent optics continues to evolve

Coherent technology was another key theme at ECOC, particularly its potential to deliver greater capacity over longer distances without the active line systems traditionally required in some applications.

The migration path may not be linear either. 100G QSFP28 coherent remains highly relevant for existing equipment, while new higher-capacity deployments may move directly toward 800G rather than necessarily transitioning through 400G.
