WDM Transceivers

In wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transceivers have the important job of converting the electrical signal from the host equipment into the optical signal which carries the encoded data stream.

The WDM transceiver is set to transmit light on a channel chosen from a standard set of WDM channels. Channel frequencies available depend on whether you are using Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM) with up to 18 channels or Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) with up to 160 channels.

The multiplexer then combines the signals received from the WDM transceivers into wavelengths for transmission.

Selecting the right WDM Transceiver

When selecting which transceivers are required, you will first need to consider bandwidth, and distance requirements and whether you will be using CWDM or DWDM as well as the form factor (SFP+, QSFP28, etc.) which is dictated by the port on your host equipment and bandwidth requirements.

The attenuation profile should also be considered for the installation. High attenuation of light is sustained at the 1310nm and 1550nm wavelengths and used for reach of at least 40km. WDM transceivers are set to transmit on these wavelengths and a standardized set of channels for other ranges.
